ISO/SAE 21434 Automotive Cybersecurity Management System
ISO/SAE 21434: Quality Standard for Cybersecurity in the Automotive Industry
As autonomous driving and connected car technology develops, so does the risk of cybersecurity breaches and malicious cyberattacks. The wireless interface could give hackers access to the electronic control systems of the vehicle itself, posing a serious threat to the safety of passengers and the public. Plans for external wireless vehicle infrastructure are already in the works, creating further challenges for road safety leaders.
Against this backdrop, UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) has issued rules for automakers and their supply chains aimed at improving cybersecurity in the industry. Cybersecurity in the automotive industry requires detailed consideration of all security aspects, namely products, processes and IT systems, and must cover the entire warranty life of the vehicle.
This led to the publication of the standard ISO/SAE 21434 on "Road vehicles - Cybersecurity engineering" . The standard takes a process approach and its goal is to achieve the safety of all electrical systems, especially electronic systems, throughout the vehicle life cycle.
Therefore, cybersecurity in the automotive industry and ISO/SAE 21434 are relevant to all players in the automotive market, from development, manufacturing and sales to end users.
What is the target group of the standard ISO/SAE 21434?
Automobile manufacturers
Supplier of hardware and software based components and systems
Engineering Service Provider
Software and ICT infrastructure provider

Certification according to ISO/SAE 21434 is important for all OEMs, system integrators and suppliers in the automotive industry.
ISO 21434 can be used for all (connected) components, systems, software and hardware within the automotive industry.
TISAX® also targets suppliers to OEMs, but it does not care about product testing. The assessment focuses on the organization itself and its interfaces and processes. ISO/SAE 21434 goes beyond this, filling in the gaps and can also be easily integrated into existing management systems.
From 1 January 2022, UN ECE 155 requires binding evidence for cybersecurity management systems in the automotive industry. Compliance with ISO 21434 is one way to provide this functionality.
